What is a music video?
A music video is a short film that is used to integrate a
song and piece of music, in order to attain promotional or artistic purposes.
Taking on modern day music videos, they are categorically used as a marketing
device with the intention to promote the sale of music recordings.
It was initially around the 1920’s in which the first idea
of music videos came about, and it wasn’t until the 1980’s that initial
planning started with MTV being the first channel to ever release a music video
and have since then adopted this as their niche. Between 1980 and 2000, music videos started
to increase in terms of production rate and the demand for videos from fans
increased as the world saw this new thing as something really special to them.
In terms of popularity, much less known artists saw this as a way of pushing
their name to the top rather than staying at the bottom, Queen came to the
stage and rose higher up the star table with their classy, blissful sounds but
yet add rather particular and abstract music videos to mix it up in the music
video industry. since the creation of YouTube in the 21st
century, its popularity has also increased as modern day mainstream artists now
use it to promote new music videos by releasing trailers of short promos on the
site for their upcoming song. This allows for celebs and artists to take
advantage of this new approach of YouTube taking on slight features allowing
site to convert to a social media platform thus allowing these celebs and
artists to market themselves to their fans and further gain notoriety in the
music industry. Some record labels have also created YouTube channels allowing
for them to show signed artists music videos through their channels as well as
the artists own YouTube channel e.g. RihannaVEVO.
Animations
Animated images within music videos are also becoming a thing and there’s no doubt that they are popular within the industry now, using Mystery Skulls as an example. Upon releasing their songs on YouTube, they use a still image which in turn attract a few thousand viewers. A fan then created an animated video to one of their most popular songs, ‘Ghost’ (which appeared on the soundtrack of the console based game WWE 2K16), generating millions of views as it had a story-line and a very mysterious feeling to it, the group then started adding more animations to their songs as it began to attract more fans and audiences, all while still allowing the same fan to create their animations. This in turn increased audience viewing, popularity and sales.

Conclusion
Upon taking into consideration what different types of music videos there and there are videos using synergy techniques to gain more revenue and profit, I will be able to understand how to direct the video if I become director. Therefore i may be able to place other products such as an Adidas hat in the video, if worn during the video, this can increase my chances of notoriety and in turn increase sales for Adidas, dependent on feedback from fans.

Live action
Currently the most mainstream, it is generally a set of moving images put together to create a real life clip featuring the artist/s or characters to portray the artist/s in a narrative or performance based clip for the song. There are many examples of this and is a basic example that it does not require so much explanation as the rest.

Product placement
Is another thing within music videos, in terms of promotion another company may use a music video to promote and attract interest into their products. This allows for Synergy between two products, thus allowing for both products to make money off each-other. The most common example of this is the consistent use of product placement by Beats as you may notice the Beats Pill in music videos, without doing research I’ve come across their products in Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines, Ariana Grande’s Break Free, and Kid Ink’s Show Me amongst many, many others. This in turn will have sparked a rise in sales and demand for the product as with these artists’ fans seeing their favourite artist with this product, they too will also be lured into buying the gadget.
